TOPICAL STUDIES

1 - Prayer and the Prayer Meeting

February 2008

For some considerable time the church elders have been stressing the vital importance of prayer - not only individual but also collective. We have the New Testament pattern of believers meeting together to pray. As a local church we not only pray together as part of all our regular meetings and services but also have our Thursday evening meeting in which prayer is the major component, as well as our special days of prayer each month.

This past week we divided the Thursday evening time between three main themes: prayer for the Christian church overall, and individual churches, throughout our country; prayer related to our own local testimony; prayer for the spread of the message of Christ throughout the world. This pattern varies from week to week. We have, for example, sometimes focused on prayer for the persecuted church around the world (an increasingly major issue now in many countries).

Whatever the emphasis, which will change as the pattern of needs changes, it is important that we meet together to pray as well as meeting for worship and preaching. With this in mind, Carl has written a short paper on the subject which Graham and I have read and commented on during its preparation. We especially recommend that it be digested thoroughly by our own church members for whom it was originally written, but trust also that it may be helpful to others.
